Raptors GM Masai Ujiri says '[BLEEP] Brooklyn' at rally before Game 1 vs. Nets, later apologizes (Video) (Ball Don't Lie)

NOTE: The Instagram video below includes an instance of foul language. User/reader/listener discretion is advised. After a five-year postseason drought, the Toronto Raptors returned to the playoffs Saturday, kicking off their Eastern Conference quarterfinals series against the Brooklyn Nets at home. The city's fans were extremely fired up for Game 1, with thousands flocking to Maple Leaf Square outside Air Canada Centre to watch the matinee affair on a huge outdoor screen outside the arena. Evidently, Toronto general manager Masai Ujiri — imported in the spring of 2013 after winning Executive of the Year honors for his work with the Denver Nuggets — was pretty fired up, too. After addressing the amped-up crowd at the pre-game pep rally outside the ACC, Ujiri punctuated his remarks with a four-letter expletive to which I, personally, was first introduced as a lad by Van Halen . As we live in the age of smartphone cameras, the moment was, of course, captured and quickly shared via social media: Well, then. Tell us how you really feel, Masai! Ujiri later confirmed that he didn't misspeak: Spoke to Masai U, who confirmed he said "F--- Brooklyn!" in ML Sqr: "I love Brooklyn. But it's playoffs. Just trying to get our fans going." — Dave Feschuk (@dfeschuk) April 19, 2014 But as word of his unkind comment toward the borough where they paint murals of Biggie began to spread, the Raptors announced that Ujiri would address media on-site at the ACC at halftime. The content of said address, of course: an apology. "I apologize wrong choice of words out there." Ujiri — Ryan Wolstat (@WolstatSun) April 19, 2014 ... but this is pretty much a "sorry, not sorry" situation: Masai Ujiri, best apology ever: 'You know how I feel. I don't like them, but I apologize.' — cathalkelly (@cathalkelly) April 19, 2014 Ujiri might find himself a little bit sorry after the game, since his pregame expletive will surely cost him a fair bit of coin. (For reference, Washington Wizards head coach Randy Wittman was fined $20,000 earlier this season for lobbing an eff-bomb during his post-game press conference.) Then again, if this was really a tactical decision rather than a case of Ujiri getting caught up in the heat of the moment, he might not mind all that much. Nets CEO Brett Yormark had no comment on Ujiri's expletive, according to Fred Kerber of the New York Post . Here's hoping Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov is crafting an appropriately "super-cool-Russian-billionaire-y" response as we speak. Raptors GM Ujiri uses profanity about Brooklyn (The Associated Press)

TORONTO (AP) -- Raptors general manager Masai Ujiri let loose a profanity during a pregame address meant to pump up a group of Raptors fans outside Air Canada Centre before Saturday's opening game of the NBA playoffs.

Eastern Conference picks: Wizards running past the Bulls? (Comcast SportsNet Mid Atlantic)

    J. Michael and Ben Standig do just that. J. Michael: On paper, this should be a sweep for Indiana, but Atlanta has played them tough with the season series 2-2. Indianas weaknesses down the stretch have been defense and shoddy point guard play, and the Hawks can spread the floor with C Pero Antic who has three-point range. In a seven-game series, however, its doubtful the Hawks can keep pace with a roster thinned by injuries.

    Nets-Raptors Preview (The Associated Press)

The Toronto Raptors won the Atlantic Division and set a franchise record with 48 wins. The Nets may think so. Brooklyn dropped four of its last five games, with coach Jason Kidd resting his regulars in a 29-point loss to Cleveland on the final night of the season, as the Nets slid from fifth to sixth in the East, earning a first-round meeting with the Raptors and avoiding fourth-seeded Chicago. The Nets may be happy, but the third-seeded Raptors aren't too pleased at the portrayal.

The three minds behind Ball Don’t Lie used up a lot of words this week detailing what should be a fantastic first round of the 2014 NBA playoffs, so we decided to include each of those words in one catch-all post. Well, not each of the words, just links to the posts. Which would include all the words. When you click on the links. Welcome to the playoffs, everyone. There are birds chirping outside for a reason. Jazz win tiebreaker, get No. 4 spot for lottery (The Associated Press)

The Utah Jazz have won a tiebreaker with the Boston Celtics, giving them a chance for a better pick in the NBA draft. The Jazz will now be slotted fourth in the lottery, with a 10.4 percent chance at the No. 1 pick, while the Celtics will have a 10.3 percent chance. If they or no teams behind them move up, Utah will pick No. 4 and Boston at No. 5. The Nets owe the pick to the Celtics from last summer's trade that landed them Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett.
